A Star Is Always Born

It is no different now.
The yearning still gnaws.
The night dark, utterly silent,
Sky stretched endlessly back
Into an infinity beyond reach.
And the fears, the tears
Are they any different?
It is no different now.
Joy sometimes, hope too, divisions
Seemingly unbridgeable, vast chasms
Opening between those closest.
Little changes, though two thousand years
Dissolve into oblivion behind us.
It is no different now.
Plus ça change,
Plus c’est la même chose.
Always the same.

Yet a word is heard dimly
Laboring out of the deafening black
Silence, almost but not inaudible.
And the angel says, “Go out,”
And the angel said, “Go out,”
Always the angel, always the voice
Bearing us up along the way
(If you do not turn to the inner light,
Where will you turn?), always calling:
“Journey far through strange country,
Follow the light you barely see
But which is the light of your life.
Follow it across the desert of your heart
Where wild beasts seek to devour you.
There is no time, there is no time
To hesitate. Now is the star’s hour,
Now you are called on a fool’s journey
Into a pig’s pen and a child’s strange
And glorious presence.” Thus speaks the angel
Again and again, no matter how dark
The darkest day, nothing changes.

It is no different now.
Now as always is the star’s hour.
Now as then a star is born to men
To lead us on. A light that darkness
Cannot overcome, despite us.

Love is not a sometimes thing,
Though we abuse it like the earth.
It is all we have to hold us up,
And it always will.

A star is always born.

  1. Dear Edward Curtin, my comment is about John F. Kennedy, and I do believe that JFK was killed by the deep state, by internal elements of the US oligarchic rulers. But there are some dogmatic orthodox leftists who claim that JFK was not killed by the US government, because JFK was not a pure communist, but a capitalist reformist. They claim that JFK was not saint, and he was an oppressor capitalist ruler just like Bush and Obama. Here is a link to an interview by them bashing the great leader JFK.

  2. Thank you Ed. That was beautiful. I think my wife Annie and I are reminded of the power of love and the beauty of the world and of our shared humanity every time we encounter a child. There is something almost magical for us about being in the presence of one of the “little ones” even for only a few moments as we walk through the village. The innocence and simply clarity of a child’s face is a balm and a welcome respite from the world of we adults – who too often dance around truth and honest sharing in both our words and with our guarded facial expressions – and in the process we make the world a colder place. I wish warmth and some peace andcontentment to you and yours Ed.

  3. I’m told there is an old saying…., “the world is in turmoil, the situation is delightful” …, obviously this ‘old saying’ can be interpreted, I assume in many different ways.

I think the man-made world is disgusting. We refer to knowledge. What knowledge? We talk about science. What science? We think we know something, and have special insights. We have falsehoods! We destroy that which we need to exist. We destroy everything ! How many forms of violence are there?

There are people running with guilt…owning someone else’s guilt. There are people who are guilty. Violence intensifying violence with the notion the most clever violence will prevail.

And we talk about knowledge. We accept words with little questioning of the words or the speaker. If I had any answers to the most pressing of questions, no one would listen anyway. People will only listen to lies and gobbledegook since that is what most people are familiar with and give approval to.

The other day I mentioned, implied, what if we, here in the u.s., in New England were the Palestinians. What would we do? Would we have a debate about what is happening and why? Would we quote authors while ignoring the person in pain sitting next to us? Would we shun someone because they are naked with no clothes? Are we immune to some catastrophe….in this present world saturated with violence, war ships, so-called very high tech weaponry, lie after lie. Could we be sold out ? Does anyone care? Does anyone consider how angry the world is at us?
